I always enjoyed these little jaunts, but the one drawback of them was the time it took to get there. With a four-hour drive from Aberdeen to Ullapool, and then a three-hour ferry journey, you wasted the best part of the day just getting there.
So, when I had the chance to travel to Lewis again last month I decided that there had to be a faster, more relaxing way to get there. I was going to visit my friend who was getting married and, as her bridesmaid, I had to return to the island for my final dress dress fitting, and being flustered and tired would be no use.
Eastern Airways operates daily weekday flights from Aberdeen to Stornoway; and at just 55 minutes, they cut the travel time considerably.

As soon as we were in the air, though, any worries I had about the propellers I could see disappeared. I’m quite used to flying, travelling long haul to visit family quite often, but I have to say that I was extremely impressed with the service on board our little plane.
Just as we were seated, we were offered hard-boiled sweets, which instantly brought back memories of flying to Jersey as a child, ears popping as we landed. We had just taken off and unclipped our seat belts when a steward came to take our drinks order. As the plane was quiet, we were actually offered two, as well as a complimentary snack. I’ve been on 12-hour flights and not had such attentive service.

The next morning we packed our bags, drove back to Stornoway and had enough time for a picnic in the grounds of Stornoway Castle with plenty of food we’d bought from the local gourmet food shop (if you ever visit, make sure to try the Welsh Dragon venison and chilli pate).
As we handed back the keys to The Beast, and basked in the sun before our check-in, we realised that there was no reason to fly abroad for a weekend away when one of Scotland’s most beautiful and interesting locations can be reached in a matter of 55 minutes.
I’ll certainly be back – there’s still so much more to explore.
