The Best of Everything is unashamedly, joyously commercial, the sort of novel you read in the bath and it doesn’t matter if you drop it in. It has all the hallmarks of the page-turning bestseller. Large cast of women? Tick. Lots of sex and shopping? Tick. Cocktails, high heels, diets, badly behaved men, broken dreams, lucky breaks, wedding bells? Back in the day this really was life-changing, high-stakes stuff. In Jaffe’s world, it was unusual for women to work, even more unusual to remain single. Sex outside marriage was tolerated for men, but banned for women (slight logistical conundrum there, but never mind). As in Mad Men, this strict moral code is a gift for a storyteller: Jaffe’s heroines are able to test the boundaries. They are changed by what they experience. But – and here comes the big difference from today’s commercial fiction for women – so is the world.

Shortly before her death, Jaffe wrote in a new introduction that after the book came out women would tell her they came to New York specifically to get a job in publishing, the world in which the novel is set. Others were inspired in other more intimate ways. “Women were forever taking off their underwear in these books,” says Carmen Callil, the author and founder of Virago Press. “Sex had a lot to do with these novels’ success. Sexual freedom and lust. There was always a subsumed lust. They had a great influence over things like the giving up of corsets.”

This was a time when the blockbuster novel for women – whatever its literary merits – had political power. Books like Marjorie Morningstar by Herman Wouk (1955), Peyton Place by Grace Metalious (1956) and The Group by Mary McCarthy (1963) varied wildly in quality, but their challenge to the established order was original and subversive. It’s easy to underestimate their importance – and the reach of their readership.

“These were great big, fat paperbacks,” says Nicola Beauman, publisher of Persephone Books, an imprint for “forgotten 20th-century novels” by (mostly) women writers.

The re-release of The Best of Everything taps into a resurgence of interest in neglected writers, Beauman adds. But here’s the crucial difference: whereas in the 21st century Carrie and her friends are desperate to snag reluctant men via whatever means available, Jaffe's heroines are out to identify the commitment phobes and then studiously avoid them at all costs.

Caroline is the book’s star: ambitious, strong and witty, she attracts alpha males but can’t bear to commit to any. Her actress flatmate Gregg is, on the other hand, a hopeless case, who follows her director crush around like a puppy, saying things like: “It’s hell to be a woman: to want so much love, to feel like only half a person, to need so much. What was it Plato had said? A man and a woman are each only half a person until they unite. Why hadn’t he made that clearer to the men?” The cost of Gregg’s desperation is the novel’s big lesson.

It’s the uncertain, fast-changing social background that makes these pre-chick-lit reads feel as if anything could happen. In The Best of Everything, April, who starts out lapping up the promises of any passing male, quickly learns what she wants and how to get it.

“It’s such a classic form of fiction: the story of a group of women hustling the world,” says Callil. The title says it all: it’s not ironic, it’s celebratory. Jaffe’s tales of the city are more than that. For anyone weaned on modern chick-lit, they’re a breath of fresh air (with a whiff of whisky, of course). Commercial women’s fiction no longer yearns for guilt-free lust or an exciting life. Instead, it depicts a perverse mirror image. Everything is just a distraction from the main event: Mr Right.

Of course chick-lit can’t win: things have changed for women and Jaffe’s novel could not be written today. But that’s our loss. Fifties fantasy? Freedom to do whatever you want. Twenty-first-century fantasy? Happily ever after. From the point of view of fiction, it’s easy to work out which is the better read.
