Menolly provides us not only a more immediate perspective, but also an extremely different, and far more human view of Pern, and what life mcfaffrey a hold, especially such a conservative one as Half Circle might be like. I had previously read one short story in the Pern series, and it was intriguing enough for me to buy this book for 50 cents. The Liveship Traders Robin Hobb 9. And then, after I was swept into the world of Pern and dragons and fire lizards, I discovered it was the first in a trilogy and had to read the next two immediately.
Her novel The White Dragon became one of the first science fiction books to appear on the New York Times bestseller list. I felt an affinity for the Benden Weyr people, though, or at least their easygoing culture, which, similar to the general vibe of Crystal Singer which I read a year or two ago, has a lot of congenial hanging out in between the hard work not to mention copious amounts of alcohol. It was her father who betrayed her ambition to be a Harper, who thwarted her love of music.
When Menolly’s nine fire-lizards come looking for her, Menolly reluctantly admits that she accidentally Impressed them all, thus becoming the center of attention. Wizardwood, a sentient wood. All this being said, the book does have its flaws.

The world Anne Mccaffrey created is intriguing, but other than that there was not much happening. After a accident renders Menolly unable to play music, she runs away from the oppressive Sea Hold and discovers the fire lizards and sets the course for an adventure that will bring rragonsong close to the dragons she sings about.
The main thing I remember feeling when I read this as a child was just how unfair life was for Menolly.
Or the unabashed use of storytelling elements–such as anen bonds with hyper-intelligent animals–that may have been stylish at the time, but are embarrassing mcxaffrey wear in public today. Lessa plans to hand these eggs out to the Lord Holders and Craftmasters who attend the Mccaffreey.
Do yourself a favor if its raining out, curl up with any of your favorite books, but I do hope you’ll give this one a try. Despite everything, McCaffrey kept me turning the pages and I’m interested in reading more about Pern. This is a great coming of age tale.
