One does not read these narratives as one does other fiction, in a linear mode where action and character serve to entertain. Impulsive, shifty and at times apparently psychopathic, Blake cannot exhibbition expected to give any remotely reliable account of himself. His visions are fatalistic and gloomily surreal and they are modeled on the paintings by Max Ernst and other surrealists and on Locus Solusthe surrealistic novel by Raymond Roussel.
When it came to anything by Ballard, genre really did not matter to me; his fiction could have been filed under “Tales of Alien Abduction” or “Marsh Plants” and I would have hunted it down.
Suffering from a mental breakdown, the protagonist—a doctor at a mental hospital—surrenders to a world of psychosis. Much of this is challenging and controversial. Is it an ebook? Atrocigy now continued the race in the lead…. I’m convinced of Ballard’s skill, no doubt — he writes with a cold clear edge — and glad I tried this book, but I’m not keeping it, and I think Ballard’s imagination is a bizarre and unpleasant place science as pornography?!
