His writing flows so well that the pages flew by, and I wasn’t even aware that I was r I enjoyed this book every bit as much as I enjoyed the first one.
It is where a warrior makes his reputation, and reputation is dear to us. Consequently, his greatest enemies are the priests of Alfred’s court. But we stayed in the cove all day. Time and money well spent.

Tie those oars up! The battles are interesting without being dragged out too long. Well crafted with a wonderful hero in Uhtred, and a superb cast of supporting characters. Much of the first season seemed to heavily focus on the major events of this book rather than the one it’s named for. It is set in 9th Century Wessex and Cornwall. The crew was unlashing the oars and taking the plugs from the oarholes. Now married with a child at the bernarx of 21, he rode into battle to Cynuit and slaughtered the Danish leader, Ubba Lothbrokson.
She and Cornwell slept in the small black space beneath the steering platform, a hole screened by a cloak, and Leofric woke me there in the dawn, worried that the missing woman would raise the country against us. In time I would learn just how much she had hated Peredur.
Uhtred and Svein however ally to kill Peredur and pillage his settlement, and Uhtred carries off Peredur’s wife, the shadow queen Iseult. Unfortunately for me though, none of the plot developments were a surprise.

They did not gain this reputation throughout history by being patient and loving of all men and women. Bernard Cornwell is a master!

I love historical fiction when it gets real like this. We had, after all, killed twenty or thirty Danes and the survivors were ashore where the Britons might or might not treat them well.
King Alfred thinks himself safe, but in truth the last kingdom of the Saxons is in grave peril It does not matter whether or not there are supernatural happenings–everybody believes in the supernatural, anyway. The water about our feet grew red. But it seemed too much of a template to get 5 stars.
Hoder is the god of the night and I prayed to him. I half fell as a wave tilted the half-swamped ship. Cenwulf and his men were behind me, and there we began the killing. But when he is accused of massacring Christians, he finds lies can be as deadly as steel. Bernrd feared the Church and the Churchmen. The description of Christianity in this book might be off putting for some, but I think it is an accurate portrayal of those times.
It sounds a good series, I guess I’d better start looking for copies!
