Stephen Henighan’s very informative Afterword is highly recommended reading as it places the novel in its historical context and greatly contributes to a deeper understanding of its importance in the literary treatment of Angola’s early years as an independent country that was caught very much in the middle of the Cold War and its competing international interests.
This is a book that will especially appeal to younger readers. I have rarely been impressed with child narrators, but this one was just perfect. Reading about a young boy’s life in Luanda, Angola’s capital is one thing.

Ondjaki again shows his talent as a story-teller. In this book Ondjaki uses his talent as a poet and the orality of Angolan Portuguese to tell children about the deep scars that almost thirty years of civil war has left on their country.
