Needless to say, I was really disappointed. Oct 10, Blair rated it liked it. Braudel has been considered one of the greatest of the modern historians who have emphasized the role of large-scale socioeconomic factors in the making and writing of history.

I find history books that join the dots civiisations large periods of trammaire really helpful, due to the detailed specialisation encouraged by the academic world of history this often hard to come by.

I was surprised by its depth and even handedness.

But it is the best history book for the upper classses. Anyone got the pdf copy of it? Have to admit, it was a little dry and hard to read at say, lunchtime when I just wanted to relax.

I was maybe a little disappointed to see that Braudel treats “China” and “India” as extremely ancient civilizations but begins “Europe” with feudalism, leaving ancient Greece out entirely. This was in opposition to the traditional kings and battles approach, and this book was intended as a textbook not accepted by the authorities. I would like to say I do admire Braudel’s intellectual acumen, I really did enjoy the broad scope of the book and all of the civilizations that it covered.

I have been saving Braudel civilisztions years, on the mistaken assumption that my French would improve enough to take him on in his original language. There are weaknesses, though.

This was quite a revolutionary book being written in On the plus side, it was an amusing read, with many facts that stand up as anecdotes or impressive trivia.

At the end of the book he speaks about the Civilisaations Union as a still-existing entity and makes many predictions that are just flat out wrong. And away from the humanities. Although not a perfect history text, and somewhat ethnocentric, it still represents a landmark document in the study of civilizations that can serve as a primer towards further study.
