Five books have been published of his interviews and correspondences. Ansen’s essay gives a ywge account of Burroughs’ career based on first-hand knowledge, but sets up for the reader a whole series of specific expectations about the letters that are–emphatically–not met.
Many would say that Burroughs loved writing about the ‘underworld’ and ‘darker’ sides of the planet.

Nevertheless, it is a nice irony that by far the cheapest of the little magazines should have been the only one to approximate the material form of Burroughs’ letters, and that this particular letter should have been the only one to make decisive use of formal features.
It reads like an entirely self-contained text, and when it ends abruptly without any signing off, the name “William Lee” at the foot of the page set in distinctive bold type seems to identify an author, not a letter-writer.
Craptacular “routine” play thing, possibly more enjoyable if one knows about the politics of the time, possibly not. Burroughs’ involvement with Big Table has become familiar, but only in terms of its publication of the Naked Lunch “Episodes.

I remember reading The Yage Letters for the first time ? The implication for any editing intervention seems clear. It was just magnificent.
