Review: Submarine by Joe Dunthorne | Books | The Guardian
I barked like a seal a few times, so yes, again… very much so. Is it a bit vile and vulgar and is there lots of graphic sex and fumblings? Dunthornd imaginary submzrine would be about lots of excellent things from films to music, to whether it would make him uncomfortable if I touched his hairI really, really enjoyed it.
This is exactly what happened with Submarine. I battled well ok, maybe battled is getting a bit giddy with the decision to whether I should class this as young adult. Plus, classing this book as YA would make it infinitely cooler because YA fiction is all the rage right now and all the indie kids read it and pretend they liked it before it got famous.
If we had gone to high school with each other I would have watched him cautiously from behind my ill-advised fringe and think that he was odd and trouble. I loved seeing the world through his xubmarine spectacles.

Well, I’m not much of a fan of pervy sex jokes or fart jokes, and at least the film spares viewers of those for the most part. The book had a number of lines that made absolutely no sense, trying so hard to be obscure and intelligent that it failed to get to any sort of point.

It has its moments of true humor and good writing, a few good quotes here and there, but mostly it was just overly bizarre, and not in a good way. Things I’ve learned from Submarine I planned to listbut I got tired of the game rather fast: A kind of Narnia. It’s a generational thing I guess, and the fact that I don’t appreciate the toilet humour, the vomiting and the farts and the general ickiness submarind the presentation makes me an old-fart in the eyes of the younger generation.
The novel aspires to such lofty ideals. Olliver is the Swansea translation of the angsty, smart, sensitive teenager who hides his vulnerability by lashing out at the people around him.
Me, myself and I
After the first couple of chapters, I was captivated by the humour and the style of presentation, but the story got old quite fast when I realized that’s all there is to it – more style than substance and too much reliance on being shocking and trending ‘s Yuppie style. I believe there are some serious pacing issues and the novel goes on too long, especially for those readers who become disenchanted with the first person narrator.
I saw the movie before reading the book, and the same thing happened there: I loved the first half hour, and then fell asleep when it kept going nowhere in the next five hours I know the movie is shorter than that, but that’s how it felt.
That’s not to say other readers will not be more susceptible to the charms of Ollie and his brand of humour.

I thought the girls in the book where well rendered, both the pyromaniac Jordana and the bullied Eve. I also think some of the issues of bullying in school, communication between generations and the way parent marital troubles reflect on the sanity of the children are worthy subjects of analysis. And I believe Joe Dunthorne has it in him to be a great modern writer. Here’s a last quote to illustrate both that he can write, and what the book is all about: It feels like this could be some clever extra scene from the play, and in a minute there’s going to be a song about how lucky we all are to be young and beautiful and live in Swansea at the end of the less awful half of an absolute bum-out of a century.

Maybe it’s just me but doesn’t everything get compared to The Catcher in the Rye? A modern day version, a version crossed with Godzilla, Holden Caulfield on speed, best thing since sliced Salinger?
I choose to discount these comparisons for three reasons: Joe Dunthorne’s debut novel about teenage angst, alienation and rebellion in Swansea in the late ‘s w Maybe it’s just me but doesn’t everything get compared to The Catcher in the Rye? Joe Dunthorne’s debut novel about teenage angst, alienation and rebellion in Swansea in the late ‘s was inevitably compared dunthirne said adventures of Master Caulfield and once more I find myself wondering what all the fuss is about.
There are moments of great levity interspersed with others of great duntborne, both handled well considering this is a book that features a teenage boy dunthorns trying to put his fist inside a virgin in a theatre sound booth and same boy writing awkward teenage love letters dutnhorne his mother from his father in an attempt to get them to ” turn the dimmer switch down ” on their bedroom light.
It’s quite a charming novel of coming to terms with yourself submarime your parents and sadly those themes and the age of the protagonist means this does limp in to the dreaded young adult category of literature. Whilst Catcher has become known as a book for teens it was intended for adults and as such deals with things beyond the school yard as it investigates it’s issues of identity and alienation, Subamrine gets bogged down in the minutiae of bodily fluids, obvious attempts at making Oliver a modern day picaro but forgetting to make him sympathetic dhnthorne any way at all.
At its heart this is dknthorne masquerading as mature, a wolf dressed in the sheeps clothing of a large dictionary, thesaurus and encyclopedia set, perfectly mirroring its jpe. I must be honest and admit that I only had an interest in reading this because of the fantastic movie adaptation.
It’s such a charming, funny and interesting movie and I was intrigued as to whether the novel was the source for this or the film maker Richard Ayoade. The answer was a little from column A and a lot from column B. The adaptation made this novel better, it added a magical dunhorne missing from OK maybe it was slightly hinted at Dunthornes prose, made the story of Oliver Tate more cohesive and most importantly adding layers of sympathy to the supporting characters in the life dunthorme this neurotic, self obsessed, teenage boy and even Oliver himself.

Oliver Tate does things which most teenagers may threaten to do after an argument, but would never dream of doing in real life. Also, despite dunrhorne unique personality, he surprisingly fits in very well at school and has no problems hiding his true self in order to gain popularity, which is something that a real teenager with a similar sort of personality ie.
A lot of the language and situations presented in the book jie extremely vulgar and graphic. Whilst it may be unsuitable for any younger teenagers, I doubt that the book would appeal to adults either due to the protagonist being a year-old boy at odds with his parents. I had hoped that a character with Oliver’s personality would not also be subject to stereotypical teenage, loutish behaviours. I really began to lose faith in him, especially about half way through the book where Oliver does something which would be seen as criminal and foolish under any circumstances.
The plot is pretty non-existent, dependant only on Oliver’s increasingly idiotic behaviours to push it forwards.

Warlord (Wolfblade Trilogy) by Jennifer Fallon – book review
Still a five-star favorite. Not because it is of the typical fantasy ilk, but because of the guy on the cover. He looks like Gabriel Aubry. Halle Berry’s baby daddy. In other words, HOT! Now that I have gotten that totally shallow piece of business off my chest, on with the real review.
This is the third and final installment of Jennifer Fallon’s Warlord trilogy and she ends it in superb fashion. In this book we see the fruition of many smaller plot threads that were started in the first book.
Marla’s first and ruthlessly spurned suitor, Hablet, the King of Fardonhya decides to invade Hythrun and kill off her family. Unbeknownst to wwarlord people of Hythrun, there is a little known law that a living Wolfblade can actually rule Fardonya, The time is opportune because the Hythrun people have just jennider devastated by a deadly plague that Alija allowed to spread in one of her more bonehead schemes to kill off Damin Wolfblade.
Damin not only survives the plague, but rises to the challenge of war. Meanwhile, there are many domestic dramas playing out: Damin’s uncle Makhas is determined to warlodr of his daughter to Damin with disastrous results; Teryn Lionclaw is on the run from her incompetent husband wqrlord has fallen under the influence of a scheming courtier; Damin’s younger brother, Narvelle Wolfblade has entered into a romance with a married woman whose husband is a powerful Warlord out for his blood; The Assassin’s guild has called on Marla to honor a promise she made to them so long ago; and Kalan, Marla and Wrayan Lightfinger hatch a diabolical scheme to bring Alija to justice.
So much happens and all of it is both exciting and satisfying.
It is nice to see the younger Wolfblades, all grown up and coming into their own. I especially like that Damin, who had consciously adopted the mien of a young, carefree, bon vivant, sheds that false image in a flash when it matters and finally to the surprise of everyone shows the true mettle of the son of Marla Wolfblade. And just in the previous two books, Fallon knows when and how to turn what could be a predicatable plot moment into an unpredictable, often shocking twist.
She does it on several occasions in this book and keeps the story moving in a grandly entertaining fashion. My favorite part is, when seeing her children safely grown up, Marla finally decides to bring her fight with Alija right out in the open.
All bets are off. She delivers a stunning body blow to Alija and the two women take off the gloves figuratively speaking and go for broke in the last chapter of the war they’ve been politely and in deadly fashion waging wqrlord each other for 25 years.
Also, the humor that was more evident in the second book continues on in this one. It isn’t cloying or even pervasive. But there is a lightness of tone, a dryness of wit that abounds. The crackling battle of wits between the fierce King of Fardhonya and his high maintenance yet stunningly canny daughter Princess Adrina is delightful.
As is the banter between Jejnifer and his brothers. When I finally closed the book on this series I sat back and sighed with pleasure. It was a great trilogy, fun to read and I can’t wait to see what else Jennifrr Fallon has in store for us.
Who the hell lets lose a plague to kill one person? It hasn’t to be the most blood thirsty attempt at assassination I’ve ever seen, and it didn’t even work. Alija Eaglespike, who has been a bitch the entire series, ramps it up in this, the last of the trilogy.
At least she gets what she deserves by the end of the book.
I guess Uennifer should apologize for starting this review off in such a strange way, but seriously, the woman was evil. And though she has been trying to kill Damin and install her own h Who the hell lets lose a plague to kill one person?
And though she has been trying to kill Damin and install her own heir into the jennider of the High Prince, the stone coldness was truly on display in this book. Between her and Mahkas, this book was jennnifer lacking villains. And it seems such a shame. Considering the power these two individuals wielded, the intelligence that they clearly possessed, it was such a waste of potential. They could have been courageous, strong leaders, but they let greed and the love of power get in the way.

I continued to love the extended family that Marla built up around herself and Damin. Though they came into it from different directions and different backgrounds, this jennifef a group of people who truly care fallonn each other, and are willing to stick around when times get tough. Such a unique and complicated character. He is the perfect match for Marla at this time in her life, and he fits into the family with ease. The two standouts for me in this book, besides Damin who I love, where Tejay and Starros.
They are two characters who don’t fit into any easy mold, but have such a core of strength running through them. They come at awrlord in different ways, have different beliefs, and want different things, but they both shine in this book. At some point int time this year I will reread and review the previous trilogy, which actually takes place before this one.
If they are half as good as these three books have been, and from what I can remember they are, I’m really looking forward to it. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. It was interesting to see the growth of Damin. As much as he grew physically and the world changed around him, the reveal of his true personality was striking, proving very well that he is much more intelligent than anyone ever expected.
Also, I am still impressed that Fallon could keep the timeline straight between the two trilogies without missing any details. Aug 17, J rated it it was ok. I first read Wolfblade when I was a teenager and I loved it like crazy. Not surprising, given that my emotional maturity was then approximately the emotional maturity of the main character, Marla Wolfblade.
I was riveted by her hunt for power and her need to protect her loved ones. I loved how she took a turn from being a silly girl into a powerful administrator.
The trilogy had lots of twists and turns, an Warning: The trilogy had lots of twists and turns, and I thought the hennifer so funny and light-hearted. Everyone speaks in warlorf the same voice. Slavery is treated cavalierly; power is wielded without truly dealing with its consequences.
For example, in the middle of the second book, Marla Wolfblade rules, after her magically brainwashed adopted step-daughter Luciena tries to kill her jennider son Damin, that for the crime of attempted assassination, the adopted step-daughter deserves death. Luciena, who was not conscious of trying to kill Damin, suffers through weeks in prison and the uennifer of the matriarch of family she thought she’d finally gained deciding she should die for an act she did not intend.
Fallon then has a last-minute deus ex machina when Luciena is exonerated by a very fast-traveling sorcerer-thief. But are there any emotional consequences to the trauma that Luciena has been exposed to?
She does not fear or hate Marla for ordering her execution. She is not even residually uncomfortable when a grown-up Damin jokes about Luciena trying to kill him. Meanwhile, another warlodd Damin and fears him because, wait for it, he called her a sissy when they were teenagers. She hates and fears him so much that, even though as an adult he’s never treated her poorly, when she thinks her lover is dead and she will be forced into marrying Damin, she commits suicide.
I mean, there were also other circumstances for Leila’s suicide, including the horrific abuse she suffered at the hands of her father, but seriously??

This discovery led to larval rearing on an experimental basis. By the Hawaiian team led by Takuji Fujimura had developed mass rearing techniques for commercial-scale hatchery production of prawn postlarvae PL.
This development spawned the first commercial farms in Hawaii and elsewhere. Both Thailand and Taiwan Province of China became pioneers in modern giant river prawn culture. The introduction of broodstock, initially from Hawaii and Thailand, into non-indigenous areas around the world began in the s.
The first major FAO project designed to expand the culture of this species began in in Thailand. Since then, giant river prawn culture has developed in every continent, particularly in Asia and the Americas.

Furthermore, there is considerable production of other freshwater prawn species, notably M. This species lives in tropical freshwater environments influenced by adjacent brackishwater areas. It is often found in extremely turbid conditions. Gravid females migrate downstream into estuaries, where eggs hatch as free-swimming larvae in brackishwater. Before metamorphosis into postlarvae PLthe planktonic larvae pass through several zoeal stages.
After metamorphosis, PL assume a more benthic life style and begin to migrate upstream towards freshwater. Larvae swim actively tail first, ventral side uppermost.
From PL onwards prawns swim forwards, dorsal side uppermost. From metamorphosis onwards prawns can also walk, not only on the sub-stratum but also over damp areas including stones by river edges, up vertical surfaces small waterfalls, weirs, etc. Larvae mostly consume zooplankton mainly minute crustaceansvery small worms, and larval stages of other crustaceans. Postlarvae and adults are omnivorous, eating algae, aquatic plants, molluscs, aquatic insects, worms, and other crustaceans.
Males and females have different growth rates and males exhibit heterogenous individual growth HIG ; these are vitally important factors in grow-out management. Three distinct male morphotypes and a number of intermediary types exist: BC males have extremely long second pereiopods; those of OC males are golden coloured; SM have small, slim, almost translucent claws.
The type and behaviour of the males affects the growth rates of other prawns.
The transition from rapidly growing OC to the slowly growing BC morphotype follows a “leapfrog” growth pattern. The presence of this new BC male then delays the transition of the next OC to the BC morphotype, causing it to attain a larger size following its metamorphosis. Normally, “berried” egg-carrying females are only used once. Commercial farms in tropical regions do not normally maintain captive broodstock for breeding purposes but adults are over-wintered indoors in temperate regions macrobrwchium order to stock ponds with PL as early as possible in the short grow-out season.
The typical male to female ratio in broodstock holding systems is BC males or OC males per 20 females, at a total stocking density of 1 prawn per 40 litres. Within a few hours of copulation, fertilization occurs externally, as the eggs are transferred to the brood chamber beneath the abdomen. The eggs remain adhered to the female during embryonic rosenberhii, which lasts about 3 weeks. At hatching, free-swimming zoeae are produced. Eggs are orange until days before hatching, when they become grey-black.
Some seed PL; juveniles is obtained from the capture fishery where M. First stage zoeae are just under 2 mm long rosenbergji grow, through 11 larval stages, to almost 8 mm at metamorphosis into PL. Individual metamorphosis can be achieved in as little as 16 days but usually takes much longer, depending macrobracnium environmental conditions.
Either type of hatchery may be inland or coastal. Inland hatcheries produce brackishwater by mixing freshwater with seawater transported from the coast, brine trucked from salt pans, or artificial seawater. Some flow-through hatcheries use a “greenwater” system, which involves fertilization to encourage the growth of phytoplankton mainly Chlorella spp. Feeding systems vary widely but typically include brine shrimp Artemia salina fed several times per day at first, reducing to a single daily feed by larval stage Prepared feed usually an egg custard containing mussel or fish flesh, squid, or other ingredients is introduced at stage 3 and its feeding frequency is increased towards metamorphosis.
Some hatcheries are integrated with nursery and grow-out facilities. Although some farmers stock grow-out ponds with young PL, many either purchase larger juveniles or rear PL in their own nursery ponds before transfer to grow-out ponds. In temperate areas with a limited grow-out season, environmentally controlled indoor nurseries are used to increase animal size before stocking outdoors as soon as temperatures become high enough.
Outdoor nurseries may be stocked with newly metamorphosed PL or with juveniles from an indoor nursery. Freshwater prawns are reared in a variety of freshwater enclosures, including tanks, irrigation ditches, cages, pens, reservoirs, and natural waters; the commonest form being earthen ponds.
Normal rearing methods comprise various combinations of the formerly used “continuous” ponds operated indefinitely, with regular cull-harvesting and restocking and “batch” single stocking, single macrobrrachium systems; these are known as “combined systems”. Most systems involve monoculture, macrobrachiium the polyculture of freshwater prawns with finfish and sometimes other crustaceans also occurs, particularly in China with carps.
Integration of freshwater prawn culture with crop production also occurs typically in Viet Nam. Pond stocking densities in tropical monoculture vary widely. The prawns are fed commercial or “farm-made” feeds, the latter being single or mixtures of ingredients, often extruded through mincers and either fed moist or usually after sun-drying.
Feeds with 5 percent lipid and percent protein are commonplace and an FCR of 2: Average growth rates depend on many factors, particularly the way in which male HIG is managed. Thus the way in which grow-out ponds are managed for example, the frequency of culling out large prawns, mostly males influences total productivity. Harvesting is either total in “batch” rearing or partial in “continuous” or “combined” rearing.
Total harvesting is achieved by gravity drain-down or water removal through pumping, while seine nets are used for regularly culling larger animals.
Stretched knot mesh sizes of 1. The time and frequency of harvesting depends entirely on the volume and characteristics the animal size of market demand. Careful handling is essential rrosenbergii harvesting onwards to ensure good quality products. Freshwater prawns tend to go “mushy” if not handled and processed correctly.
Firstly, it is essential to prevent prawns from becoming crushed during harvesting.
Prawns sold fresh must not be kept on ice for more than 3 days. Providing production cost data is difficult, not only because the information is usually proprietary but also because it is site-specific. For example, one review of hatchery operating costs all figures were normalised to USD gave an average of USD Hatchery investment costs ranged from USD Typically, feed expenses represented at least 40 percent of total nursery production costs. The average cost split was 30 percent feeding, 20 percent seed, 15 percent labour and 35 percent other expenses.
The major disease problems affecting Macrobrachium rosenbergii generally occur because of poor intake water treatment, poor husbandry, overcrowding, poor sanitation, and non-existent or inadequate quarantine procedures. The measures to combat these problems are referred to as improved husbandry IH in the table below, which records some of the more important diseases.
In some cases antibiotics and other pharmaceuticals have been used in treatment but their inclusion in this table does not imply a recommendation. In some cases antibiotics and other pharmaceuticals have been used in treatment but their inclusion in this table does not imply an FAO recommendation. Both macribrachium and international markets exist and are expanding. Peeled, mostly wild-caught Macrobrachium rosenbergii have long been exported globally, but farmed shell-on and normally head-off freshwater prawns are also a familiar sight in the supermarkets of Europe now.
To a lesser extent, this also occurs in macrobrachiu, USA mainly for consumption by Asians or in restaurants serving Asian food and Japan. India, Bangladesh, Viet Nam and Thailand export a significant proportion of their wild-caught and farmed prawns.
Potential for expansion exists but small-scale producers may need to co-operate in collective marketing to exploit these opportunities. Freshwater prawns are a distinct product from marine shrimp, which have their own favourable culinary characteristics. Farmed production is rapidly expanding in Asia. The rate of expansion in the largest producer, China, has slowed, partly due to the farming of an alternative indigenous species Macrobrachium nipponense and partly because marine shrimp are now being reared in freshwater and are sometimes referred to erroneously as freshwater prawns.
Chinese production actually fell in but, as the global market expands, is expected to expand again later. Production in India and Thailand expanded by more than 50 percent per year rosenbegii and ; this trend is expected to continue. There is also potential for expansion in Bangladesh, a traditional exporter from its capture fisheries. Indonesian production is reported in for the first time.

Fridrich (CFOP) – Stage 1. July 4th by Chris Durnford. If you have already read our beginner’s solution guide, you will already know how to do this step. The CFOP Method (Cross – F2L – OLL – PLL), sometimes known as the Fridrich method, is one of the most commonly used methods in speedsolving a 3×3×3 Rubik’s Cube. CFOP is the most frequently used speedsolving method for the 3x3x3 for the 3×3 Rubik’s Cube since have been set with CFOP, with the.
CFOP is the most frequently used speedsolving method for the 3x3x3 cube. It is also known as the Fridrich Method after its popularizer, Jessica Fridrich.
In part due to Fridrich’s publication of the method on her website inCFOP has been the most dominant 3×3 speedcubing method since aroundwith it and its cvop used by the vast majority of the top speedcubers such as Feliks ZemdegsMax ParkSebastian WeyerMats Valketc.
In reality, many developments were made in the early ’80s by other cubers who have cfoo to the method in its current form.
The constituent techniques and their original proposers are as follows:. During the resurgence rubi speedcubing’s popularity in the late ’90s and early s, there was a general lack of information on the sport. Fridrich’s website offered a vast wealth of information for those entering the sport, including a full description of CFOP with complete lists of rbik. As a result, many who learned from her website began to call this method the “Fridrich Method,” which explains the common use of the term today.
Several high-profile cubers have long disputed this terminology; Ron van Bruchemfamously, has publicly written that he will never call CFOP the “Fridrich Method. The term cfoo has since seen increasing usage compared to back then, also in part motivated by efforts to standardize terminology in method classification, and is now seen, commonly, as “Fridrich Method.
While some cubers still insist on the term “CFOP,” Fridrich’s contribution to the popularization of the method is undeniable, and many others accept the term “Fridrich Method” as established terminology and a perfectly valid synonym for “CFOP. In particular, it combines some steps of the said method into one by using many more algorithms.
Here, we outline pure CFOP without any additional trick. Also, the cube is commonly solved with the white side on top for the cross, yellow on the bottom for the cross, and opposite for the other steps. However, it is NOT required. Make a cross on one side by solving all edges of a given face. A Make sure to align the edges with the second-layer centers.
Speedcubing Guide | SolveTheCube
It is recommended that you solve the cross on the bottom, left, right or back face and that you become familiar doing cofp cross with all colors; not just one. Fill in the four slots between the cross pieces, one slot at a time. Each slot is filled by inserting a corner and its corresponding edge simultaneously.
Most of the 41 cases have reasonable intuitive solutions.

The completion of this step leaves one with just the last layer, typically placed on top. Those new to OLL break up the step into two.
This greatly reduces the number of cases; 2-look OLL has 9 cases. However, note that this is a few seconds slower. Those new to PLL break up the step into two.

A chromatogram will show a response from a detector as a peak.
While there are several ways to quantify the peak, one of the most common is peak area, thus: It is important to remember that variations in a gas chromatography GC system and analysis methodology can be the cause of a deviation in the response factor.
Response factors are important when using GC for quantitative chromacaxemy.
What is a Response Factor?
Therefore, for reproducibility in sample measurements, a method of eliminating variability in the response factor must be used. One of the easiest ways to eliminate variation in the response factor is to use relative response factors and an internal standard to calibrate the GC.
The response curomacademy calculated for each analyte are then used to establish the RRF between the two chromacadem thus: The RRF can be used to calculate the unknown concentration of analyte A in the presence of a known concentration of analyte B using the following equation:. Using RRFs is beneficial chromaademy one of the samples is an internal standard – a calibration then allows multiple analyses to be run on different samples. An internal standard IS is a compound that is vc in physical and chemical characteristics to the sample being analysed.
It must be inert to the sample and must not react with the sample or any solvent used to dilute or prepare it for GC. To determine the ratio of two compounds A and B in a sample, first the GC has to be calibrated. Once the calibration is complete, the sample can be analysed and the concentrations of A and B in the unknown sample determined. A simplified procedure is:. Add a known amount of IS. The same concentration of IS should be used in the calibration and analysis samples.
After analysis, the results required are the peak areas of A, B and IS. Since we know the peak areas of A and Chrlmacademy from step 3and the concentration of IS used, we can calculate the concentration of A. A similar calculation yields the concentration of B.
