Clarity and simplicity are the complete opposite of simple-mindedness. Tufte follows up his debut classic with an even more beautiful piece of graphic art disguised as a guide to ways to display three and more dimensions on a flat surface. Finally, “Small Multiples” shows how showing multiple cases in a single data ehvisioning can be particularly effective, and “Narratives of Space and Time” approaches how to tell longer stories in data graphics.

Even the book’s ending is abrupt, as if Tufte had simply run out of examples or said all he wanted to say. Of course, you don’t know what they really mean yet, but you could probably take a guess and get really close. A gorgeous read for anyone who enjoys visualizations.

I suppose there are some data graphics that are redesigned by Tufte scattered around these pages, but they tend to be alterations of the prior design rather than a ground-up example of how to go from raw data to a principled finished data visualization.

So when Tufte was brought up in the book club I was happy to push for this one that I hadn’t had a tfte to read as thoroughly as I would have liked. I think I had the wrong expectations for this book, so I was left disappointed. Tuftea professor emeritus of statistics, graphic design, and political economy at Yale University has been described by The New York Times as “the Leonardo da Vinci of Data”. Darrell Huff and Edward Tufte have recognized and identified the problem of false communication, and between them give a dense, brilliant course in how to avoid it.

I appreciate his view on self exemplifying documents and the need for intelligent and beautiful design of information.

Tufte does a great job of putting the argument for meaningful envisioning of information. Envisioning Information by Edward Envisionung. Tufte argues effectively that clarity and the goal of the project should always be in the forefront of the creator’s mind, eschewing concepts that muddle that goal. If you want some perspective on designs that are both aesthetically pleasing and envisionijg some data, then this book might work for you. This book is not really too different from Envisionlng R. English Choose a language for shopping. He uses images from other sources to show the strong and weak points in a way that makes intuitive sense; Tufte will explain why you struggle to understand a graph.
