My family was picking on me last week for writing long reviews on here, so I’m going to just stop here: As he grows older and more terrifying, Harriet finds she cannot love him, David cannot bring himself to touch him, and their four older children are afraid of him. I read a summary online from a university, and it captures the gist of things, without really answering the question.

Other books in the series. Ein Paar, das nicht sehr leidenschaftlich wirkt, aber beide haben eine ganz bestimmte, sicher konservativ anmutende, Vorstellung, wie ihr Leben sein soll.

That damn First World War, which rode my entire childhood, because my father was so damaged by it. Like an incurable disease, it appears in the middle of joy, takes over little by little until it becomes the absolute king of a brand-new sorrowful kingdom. Happy because we decided we would be. Now, after a few days of complaining to my boyfriend, as well as giving him a play by play of the plot so he could better understand my disappointmentI I am still trying to figure out what I think about this book.

I felt as if the whole thing was going on in the Middle Ages. Should a mother choose one child at the expense of the others? By the time she gives birth, she already has so much resentment for the pain her baby had already “caused” her.

Para empezar, la forma de conocerse de Harriet y David, su marido, es surrealista. Then the fifth child arrives, and Harriet’s worst fears come true when the baby arrives and changes the family dynamic for the worse — ripping the family to pieces and causing Harriet to question whether a child can truly be unlovable and unwanted.

The other main thing that bothered me was the parents conclusion toward the end of the book that their fifth child’s nature was due to some sort of latent paleolithic genes. The only difference in Harriet is that she turns her head when what she expected to hear is not what she had heard, though she is still afraid to look that’s important and doesn’t live. For anyone who enjoyed the book this probably won’t seem like a very good reason, but it’s my reason all the same.

But the writing is terrible – really really bad- the kind that spells everything out and makes grand sweeping statements about couples meeting at a party and deciding to wed three months later and has the subtlety of a meteor crash throughout.

When I finished the book, I was left dissatisfied. For me it is more an untreated subject. A young couple decides not to join the progress of the Sixties and have a large, happy family instead.

I cannot figure out why the Fifth Child is so disturbing, rakish, and at times unappealing. Abnormally strong or evil as he may be, no 18 month old baby is going to outrun a grown woman for over a mile on little stubby baby legs. Around and around and around: It means that they’re some kind of evil demon baby that God sent you as punishment for some reason or other, and ,essing he’ll make your life a living hell and your family would probably be better off lessnig you just got rid of him altogether.

It’s short but packed with lots of ideas concerning family, mother-children relationships, rl -wife relationships, societal expectations, etc.

We know what we think we should do and feel, but if this was your family, what decision would you take?

It’s an in person book club choice, so the upcoming meeting will definitely be an interesting one. At first it appears that everything will even out for the couple. In the beginning it seems like an “ordinary” story but then arrives Ben, the child that apparently comes from an ancient world and who ruins the well-being of the all family.

I can’t say that this was boring or that I didn’t enjoy it to some degree but it was strange and it left me feeling empty and dodis. To ask other readers questions about El quinto hijoplease sign up.
