While the species approach may have pedagogical benefits the best apologia for which has been written by Alan Belkin in his ‘Counterpoint’, although I cannot agree with it; saying, for example, that the first species forces a student to focus on melodic shape is in my opinion misguided, as rhythm is very much part of a melody’s shape. I would use this as a companion to studying counterpoint or as a review since it has a different way of saying things and is concise.
First species in three-part counterpoint essentially follows the same rules prescribed for two-part writing. I only wish the first part of the Gradus ad Parnassum had been included. In he was accepted at the Jesuit university there, where his musical talent became apparent. I understand why he would recommend that as this book requires time and practice to work out. The second note of the counterpoint may be consonant bars 1, counteproint, 6, 10, 11, 12 and 13 or dissonant bars 2, 3, 4, 7, 8 and 9 with the corresponding note in the cantus firmus. It is amazing how Fux could make such a complicated subject seem simple, or at least understandable! Nice and short, really; of course it is.
In the following example, the dissonant second note 7 leaps to the third note, rather than moving by step.
Unsourced material may be challenged and removed. I believe JJ Fux’s treatise on counterpoint is essential to any pupil wishing to learn the craft of tonal composition.
It goes through Species for 1 voice, and proceeds with developments of up to 4 voices. The species are, in order, note against note; two notes against one; four notes against one; ligature or suspensions one note against one, but offset by half of the note value ; and florid counterpoint, in which the other species are combined freely. It would be a great second book for someone wishing to learn theory. Anybody interested in learning counterpoint form historical sources is better adivsed to look at Morley, Tinctoris and Zarlino for the Renaissance and Mattheson, Rameau and Marpur for the Baroque.

Fourth species like second species, requires two notes for every given note in the cantus firmus. Doing this gave me an deep understanding of the text and Fux’s method. That said, if you are capable of reading basic musical notation, you shouldn’t have too much trouble.
