I think the author want to imitate Dan Brown. Frightening powers operating from the shadows now want him for their own, forcing Caine to seek help from a most improbable ally — a beautiful rogue CIA agent skilled in the death arts — on a desperate race for survival with his sanity hanging by the slenderest of threads.

Kuki rated it did not like it Oct 15, His second novel, Empathy, has been published in in German, Japanese and Turkish. He is a compulsive gambler, and heavily in debt to the local mafia. In fact, there a number of mathematic formulas and examples that are very interesting, if not outright fun, which is surprising for those of us who have a deep rooted fear of this subject matter.
But wait, his opponent seems awfully sure of himself too. During the course of the novel, Caine undergoes an experimental medical treatment in an attempt to set his life straight.
The only hand that can beat four aces is a royal straight flush. I like the scenes showing the protagonist as a math professor. Improbable is the story of a gifted young man named David Caine, who has been troubled by debilitating epileptic seizures to the extent that his medical condition has thrown his life completely off track.
Suddenly he is having visions of the past, present, and future; either peering through a window into an alternate reality or teetering on the precipice of a psychotic breakdown. Fawer lives in New York with his partner, Meredith, and far too many pet fish.

Despite all the action of which there is plenty and all of it tight without a single loose endthere is a serious scientific hypothesis underneath the layers of the various subplots. Adam Fawer is the person who challenged Stephanie Williams to write a novel before she died of breast cancer, thus we have Stephanie to thank for finally helping Fawer to realize his first novel of which I truly hope there are more to come and to Fawer for inspiring Williams to write her one and only novel.
