From my admittedly far from all encompassing experience with Joe Haldeman, he reminds me of a talented handy man struggling with his projects. The changeling borrows biological and job information from a Californian woman, Rae Archer, to apply for a job at Poseidon.
Identity is also on the agenda, particularly gender issues. I camouflave entirely happy to suspend my nitpicks about all of the plot’s little nagging issues at this point and allow myself to get caught up in the flow. The Changeling has survived by adapting the forms of many different organisms. Two immortal, shapeshifting beings journey through time in very different ways, experiencing human life and searching for others like them.

Campbell’s “Who Goes There? This is, again, a highlight of the book’s first half, as not only does it keep things new and exciting, but is also used as a form of social commentary in that we’re shown the haaldeman of person the aliens observe they’ll have to become in order to fit in.
The changeling lives in the ocean for millennia, taking the form of a great white sharkkiller whaleor porpoise hhaldeman it explores, and it gradually forgets where it came from. At last, her spaceship traps “Jack,” and, revealing her true self large, shimmering, colorful, “inhumanly beautiful”she tells Russ that she must leave.

All in all, there were a quite a few enjoyable parts of this book, but they don’t really come together very well. It was Josef Mengele’s assistant in the concentration camps at one point, fer cripes sake and, in a nastily cynical turn, later works as a Mossad agent.
A very ‘mainstream thriller’ feel to this novel; it’s enjoyable but not extremely memorable. The mysterious find attracts the alien beings—the ” changeling ” and the “chameleon”—to Samoa, where one halddeman the meaning of the object and the other speculates on its relationship to each of them. One more book like Camouflage and Haldeman will certainly be locked up for theft of the reader’s time.
You cannot make a reactor that can also function as a nuclear bomb; these are two completely different devices. As Rae approaches the artifact, which she now recognizes as her spaceship, Jack Halliburton appears in the room, traps them there, and reveals himself as the chameleon. There are far better books in the science-fiction genre more deserving of the Nebula Award than this. In the near future, a mysterious alien artifact reminiscent of that in camouflate is discovered on the ocean floor.

Russell Sutton owns a small but expert marine research company. Preview — Camouflage by Joe Haldeman. Though a compelling read, the end did not deliver. It falls in love with the scientist it planned to use. But Camouflage is primarily the changeling’s story, from the day it rises from the oceans where it has been living as a shark for ages, and encounters human beings for the first time. In the end, if Camouflage were a first novel written by an unknown author and not by Joe Haldeman, renowned SFWA Grand Master, Science Fiction Hall of Fame member, and multiple Hugo and Nebula Award winner, not only would it not have won the Nebula Award, it may well have made the rounds of publisher rejections as so many books do.
Slowly over the course of many years, it gains more and more of an understanding of humanity, enough so that it can pass for human, though it can also shift into any creature or mimic any object at any time it needs. Thanks for telling us about the problem.
