Bukowski has a well known contempt for Hollywood types, whom he considers phonies, hacks, hustlers, and hucksters, and his rendering of his immersion in this world is funny and memorable.

As a sendup of Hollywood, the novel succeeds, and even inholds up against what we know of Hollywood and the movie industry today. Breezy, easy insight into the making of Barfly, which is a movie I liked before Hollywopd read Bukowski. There are a plenty of booze and ironies in this novel.
